Ashley Smith, a former YSU distance runner who was part of two Horizon League Champion winning cross country teams, is in her third year as a volunteer assistant coach for the Penguins. Smith works with the distance runners and helps in other areas of the program.
In her three seasons, the women have captured the Horizon League Indoor and Outdoor Championships each year. The men won the triple crown in 2016-17 and 2018-19 - Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor - and again claimed the indoor title in 2018.
Smith was a key contributor on the Penguins' 2013 and 2014 Horizon League Cross Country Championship teams. Smith was also a distance runner for the Penguins competing in the 800m, the mile, the 3,000m and the 5,000m. At the end of her YSU career she also threw the javelin.
A native of Newark, Ohio, she was a four-time letterwinner in track and cross country at Licking Valley High School. During her career she set high school records in the mile (indoor) and the steeplechase. Smith was named first-team all-district honoree twice and a second-team all-league selection three times.
