Youngstown State senior women's basketball player Liz Hornberger has been named the Horizon League Player of the week, and freshman teammate Jenna Hirsch is the league's Freshman of the Week for the period ending Jan. 19, the conference office announced on Monday.
Hornberger, a native of Reading, Pa., is the conference player of the week for the first time in her career. Hirsch, from Marlette, Mich., was also the league's freshman of the week on Dec. 23. The pair helped the Penguins to their first win over Green Bay in nine years on Thursday, and YSU remained the Horizon League's only unbeaten team in conference play with a win over Milwaukee on Saturday. Both players averaged 14 points over the two games in a balanced scoring attack that had four Penguins average between 13.5 points and 14.5 points for the week.
Hornberger was 10-for-20 from the field and 8-for-17 from 3-point range while playing all but two minutes during the week. She hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in 40 minutes in the victory over Green Bay on Thursday, and she scored 17 points behind a season-best five 3-pointers and five assists in the win over Milwaukee. Hornberger now has now made 159 3-pointers in her career, which ranks fifth in school history. The senior captain has also scored in double figures in five straight games for the first time in her Penguins career.
Hirsch posted solid numbers in several categories with averages of 14 points, 5.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds in the two victories. She scored a career and team-high 20 points against Green Bay, including 11 in the 5:09 as the Penguins closed out the victory. Hirsch then registered a career-high nine assists to go along with eight points and five rebounds in the win over Milwaukee on Saturday.
Youngstown State will play host to Oakland on Saturday at 4:35 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the YSU men's basketball team.
