Youngstown State junior forward Heidi Schlegel has been named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 23, the conference office announced on Monday.
Schlegel averaged 24 points and 7.5 rebounds in two games last week as Youngstown State won at Milwaukee and Green Bay to force a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings. The Wapakoneta, Ohio, native scored 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field in YSU's 81-69 win over Milwaukee on Friday. On Sunday, she had game highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds as YSU beat Green Bay 72-63 for its first regular-season sweep of the Phoenix.
In addition to recording her eighth double-double of the season, Schlegel went over 1,000 career points during the Green Bay game. She is the 18th member of Youngstown State's 1,000 points club.
This is the first time in Schlegel's career that she has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week.
Detroit's Megan Galloway edged YSU's Jenna Hirsch for the conference freshman-of-the-week honor.
Youngstown State will play three of its last four games of the regular season at home, starting with Thursday's contest against UIC. Tipoff against the Flames is set for 7:05 p.m., and the YSU Student Government Association is sponsoring Beach Night Funfest in conjunction with the game.
