Youngstown State senior women's basketball player Heidi Schlegel has been named the Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for December, the conference office announced on Friday.
Schlegel is the League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the third time in her career and for the first time in 2014-15. She averaged 14 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists in leading the Penguins to a 5-1 record during the month. She surpassed 20 points against Akron (25) and Robert Morris (22), and she went an impressive 24-of-26 from the free-throw line in December.
For the year, Schlegel ranks second in the conference with eight double-doubles, and she's third with 9.8 rebounds per game. The fifth-year senior also ranks fourth in free-throw percentage (.778) and seventh in scoring (15.7 ppg).
Schlegel had an outstanding first semester as a graduate student in the classroom, earning a 4.0 grade-point average while studying interdisciplinary communications. The Wapakoneta, Ohio, native graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.73 GPA as a middle childhood education major last spring. She was an Academic All-Horizon League honoree in 2013-14, and she's been a mainstay on YSU'S Dean's list and the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll throughout her career. Schlegel also recently became one of 30 Division I Women's Basketball players in the country to be selected as a candidate for the 2014-15 Senior CLASS Award.
