Youngstown State senior forward Latisha Walker has been named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 4, the conference office announced on Monday.
Walker, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, averaged 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting 68.2 percent from the field for the Penguins during the week. She scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting in helping YSU beat previously unbeaten Akron 75-62 last Monday. She added 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the campaign, while also blocking three shots. Walker had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field in Friday's loss at Cornell.
Walker ranks second in the Horizon League in field-goal percentage at 50 percent, and she's tied for second in blocks and double-doubles. Walker also ranks fourth in free-throw percentage, sixth in rebounding and 14th in scoring. She has upped her scoring average by 5.1 points per game in 2014-15.
Walker is the first Penguin in 2014-15 to be named the Horizon League Player of the Week in women's basketball. Two of her teammates, Nikki Arbanas and Indiya Benjamin, have been named the conference Freshman of the Week.
Youngstown State will begin Horizon League play on Thursday when it plays at UIC at 8 p.m. Eastern.
