Youngstown State sophomore forward Sarah Cash has been named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced on Monday.
Cash averaged 23 points and 6.5 rebounds during the week of Dec. 28 through Jan. 3 in leading the Penguins to victories in both of their games during the week. She played especially well in the second halves, averaging 17.5 points and making 15 of her 16 attempts from the field. She helped Youngstown State rally from an eight-point deficit against Tennessee State and a 15-point second-half deficit at Detroit.
Against the Tigers on Dec. 30, Cash scored 17 of her 22 points in the second half as YSU outscored Tennessee State 42-23 over the final 20 minutes. She was 8-for-9 from the field in the game, including 7-for-7 in the second half after sitting for the final 12 minutes of the first half with two fouls. She then scored 20 of her career-high 24 points in the final 20:03 at Detroit on Saturday. She started the game 2-for-7 from the field, but she made a basket in the final seconds of the first half and proceeded to go 8-for-9 in the second half. Cash completed the Penguins' comeback by making a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining to give them a 72-70 victory.
Cash leads the Horizon League and ranks fifth in the country with a .638 field-goal percentage this season. The Lordstown, Ohio, native also ranks eighth in the league in scoring average at 14.5 points per game, and she is 12th in rebounding. Cash earned the League's Player-of-the-Week nod for the first time in her career on Dec. 14.
