Alexus Burkhart has committed to join the Youngstown State women's basketball team as a preferred walk-on beginning in the 2017-18 season, YSU head coach John Barnes announced on Wednesday.
Burkhart is a 5-foot-6 guard from North Robinson, Ohio, which is 20 miles west of Mansfield. She is a two-time First-Team All-Northern 10 Conference selection and an all-district honoree while playing for Colonel Crawford High School.
"Alexus is a tough kid who can both handle the ball and shoot well," Barnes said. "She had high interest from several Division II and Division III schools, but it was very important for her to play at our level. She's athletic and has a high motor, and she can put some pressure on defensively. She's also a very good student, which makes her an all-around great fit for our program."
Burkhart averaged 14.6 points and scored her 1,000th career point in January as she repeated as a first-team all-conference selection as a senior for the Lady Eagles. Additionally, she was an All-Crawford County All-Star, a first-team all-district honoree by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association in Division III, and she was a third-team all-district pick by the Associated Press.
As a junior, Burkhart ranked fourth in the Northern 10 Conference with 17 points per game while making 57 3-pointers. She went on to represent Ohio at the Adidas Shootout in Chicago after excelling in a showcase game at the Eastern Ohio Basketball Camp heading into her senior year.
Burkhart joins Amara Chikwe, Chelsea Olson, McKenah Peters and Anne Secrest, who all signed a National Letter of Intent in November, as members of YSU's Class of 2021.
