Youngstown State guard Chelsea Olson is the Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the third consecutive week, the conference office announced on Monday. Olson is the first player to be named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week three straight times since the award was instituted in 2013-14.
Olson averaged nearly a double-double last week in helping the Penguins earn a pair of road wins. Olson scored 12 points while adding nine rebounds and five assists in Thursday’s victory at Oakland, and she followed that up with eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and a pair of 3-pointers at Detroit Mercy on Saturday. She averaged 10 points, nine rebounds and 4.5 assists in the two contests.
Olson, a native of Westby, Wis., is averaging 7.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists for the year. Her .423 field-goal percentage is the best among YSU’s guards, and she leads the team with a .370 3-point field-goal percentage. Over the last three weeks during her run of league accolades, she is leading the Penguins with 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Olson and the Penguins will play two more road games this week. YSU will play at IUPUI on Thursday at 7 p.m., and they’ll play at UIC on Saturday at 3 p.m. Eastern. Both games will be broadcast live on 1390 WNIO and ESPN3.
