Youngstown State guard McKenah Peters has been named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the period ending Feb. 25, the conference office announced on Monday.
Peters, a native of LaGrange, Ohio, is the second YSU freshman to earn the award this season. She won it for the final week of the regular season, and teammate Chelsea Olson won it four consecutive weeks from Jan. 22 through Feb. 12.
Peters averaged 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds off the bench to help YSU earn two wins last week and finish the regular season as winners of nine of its final 11 contests. The freshman scored 11 points, made three 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds in 24 minutes in Monday's win at Northern Kentucky. Peters then scored 12 points, made two 3s and had four rebounds in 22 minutes in the win over Cleveland State.
Peters has averaged 8.6 points over the last seven games and is 14-for-29 from 3-point range in that stretch. She ranks fifth in the Horizon League with a .382 3-point field-goal percentage for the season.
Peters and the Penguins will begin play in the Little Caesars Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
