Scouting Report

  • The Youngstown State women's basketball team will begin its 44th season with the earliest opener in program history as it hosts Robert Morris on Tuesday. Tipoff at Beeghly Center is set for 7:02 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on the SportsAnimal 1390 WNIO and ESPN+.
  • Both the Penguins and Colonials will be looking to build off postseason berths. YSU won 10 of its final 14 games in 2017-18 to earn a bid to the Women's Basketball Invitational, and Robert Morris played in the Women's NIT.
  • YSU has played in the postseason four times in the last six seasons with WNIT berths in 2013 and 2015 and WBI bids in 2016 and 2018.
  • Head Coach John Barnes returns for his sixth season, and his entire staff of John Nicolais, Andy Crane, Courtney Davidson, Nicole Griffin and Jenn Lawrence is also back. YSU has an 82-77 record in Barnes' first five seasons.
  • Sarah Cash returns for her fifth season to finish what could go down as one of the all-time great careers at YSU. She is on pace to set the school record for career field-goal percentage, and she also ranks in the top 20 in points, field goals, free throws and blocks.
  • Cash was voted Preseason First-Team All-Horizon League, and sophomore Chelsea Olson was voted to the second team.
  • YSU will dress a maximum of nine players for the foreseeable future. Of the 13 players on the roster, two juniors will sit out as Division I transfers, and two freshman guards are out indefinitely with injuries.
  • YSU has made at least 200 3-pointers in eight straight seasons, and it has led the Horizon League in 3-pointers per game in four straight campaigns.

Scouting Robert Morris

  • Junior Nneka Ezeigbo was selected to the Preseason All-NEC Team after earning a second-team nod last season. She led the Colonials in scoring (10.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.0) despite playing just 18.6 minutes per game off the bench last season.
  • Robert Morris shot 57.9 percent from the field and outscored the Penguins 40-12 in the paint in an 84-52 win in Moon Township last season.
