The Youngstown State women's bowling team posted a winning record for the second straight day and concluded its opening weekend as a program with a 7-3 record at the Bud Whitman Memorial.
After going 4-1 in Baker games on Saturday, the Penguins posted a 3-2 mark in traditional matches on Sunday. Youngstown State beat Adelphi, which was ranked 19th in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Preseason Poll, 912-883 for its first win of the day, and the Penguins also topped Coppin State 992-803 and Daemen 967-759. YSU lost 982-896 to Franklin Pierce in the first match of the day, and the Penguins dropped an eight-pin, 930-922, decision to Howard in the final match.
Youngstown State finished sixth in total pinfall for the second straight day with 4,689, which was one pin behind Adelphi. YSU was one of five schools in the 19-team tournament to win at least seven matches.
Rachel Darrow was the top scorer for the Penguins with a 991 in five games for an average of 198.2. Alexis Grim had the highest game by a Penguin with a 225 in the first match against Franklin Pierce, and she averaged 192.4 over her five games. Michaela Edwards averaged 190.2 with a high of 222, and Nikki Mendez averaged 180.2 with a high game of 211.
The fifth spot in the lineup on Sunday was used by three different bowlers. Ashley Kolb shot 149 in the first match against Franklin Pierce, and Rachel Ellis bowled a 168 in both the second and third matches. Emily Dietz shot 213 versus Daemen and 186 versus Howard.
Youngstown State's next tournament will be in two weeks at the FDU NJ Jamboree, hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson University in Elmwood Park, N.J.
