Youngstown State freshman Nikki Mendez finished 17th among some of the top bowlers in the country on Saturday as the Penguins continued play at the Track KAT Klash.
Mendez knocked down 999 pins in YSU's five traditional matches on Saturday at Emerald Lanes for an average of 199.8. She bowled at least a 180 in each round and finished the day with a high game of 218. Rachel Ellis registered YSU's next highest average at 173.0 over two games, and Rachel Darrow averaged 171.2 in five games.
As a team, the Penguins went 0-4 against four ranked opponents and had a bye in their five team matches on the day. The Penguins averaged 840.6 and had a high of 901 in their unopposed match. YSU's losses came to No. 24 Jackson State, No. 6 Sam Houston State, No. 22 Prairie View A&M and No. 18 Tulane.
Youngstown State will enter Sunday's bracket format in 12th place and will have a rematch against Tulane. Action will begin at 9:20 a.m. Eastern.
