The Youngstown State bowling team went 3-1 in team matches on the second day of competition at the Brunswick Bearcat Open on Saturday. The event is being held at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights, Ill.
The Penguins started the day with an uncontested match due to an odd number of teams in its pool, and they went on to win their first three head-to-head matches. The Penguins beat #21 St. Francis Brooklyn 863-795 for their first win of the weekend, and they topped Valparaiso 963-849. Youngstown State then edged Lincoln Memorial 902-899 to improve to 3-0 on the day, and the Penguins fell 1,032-827 to #10 Central Missouri.
Ashley Kolb led the Penguins individually with a five-match total of 928, an average of 185.6. She finished two pins better than Emily Dietz, who posted a 926. Dietz had the highest individual game by the Penguins on the day with a 215 in the third match against Valpo, edging Kolb by one pin. Emma Dockery bowled three games over 185 and finished with 861, and Nikki Mendez recorded an 860 in her five matches.
YSU will enter bracket play on Sunday with the 16th seed after totaling 8,852 pins in its 10 matches on Friday and Saturday. The Penguins will start at 9:30 a.m. Eastern against Lincoln Memorial.
