The Youngstown State bowling team will participate in its second tournament of the 2017-18 season this weekend at the Brunswick Bearcat Open. The event will be held at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights, Ill., and be hosted by defending national champion McKendree. All of YSU's matches will be streamed live on the YSUsports YouTube channel.

Tournament Format: The Brunswick Bearcat Open will have a standard weekend format with Baker play on Friday, traditional matches on Saturday and bracket play to conclude the tournament on Sunday. There will be five Baker matches beginning at 10:40 a.m. Eastern on Friday, and Saturday's action begins at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. Teams will be seeded based on total pinfall for Sunday's bracket, which starts at 9:30 a.m.

Recapping Last Week: Youngstown State is coming off its most successful tournament in program history. The Penguins earned a pair of trophies at the season-opening Bud Whitman Memorial two weeks ago, finishing third in both Baker and team formats. Sophomore Nikki Mendez was the top individual finisher during team play, placing sixth in the field with a five-game total of 1,035. Freshman Emma Dockery finished three spots back with a total pinfall of 1,019.

Scouting the Penguins: Youngstown State is in its second year competing as an NCAA program and was ranked 24th in the National Tenpin Coaches Association preseason top 25 poll. YSU was ranked 25th in the final poll in 2016-17 with its top five bowlers all being freshmen. The Penguins earned five top-10 finishes at tournaments and earned 20 wins over ranked teams.

Scouting the Field: All eight teams that qualified for the 2017 NCAA Tournament and a total of 17 teams in the NTCA Top 25 will be among the field of 24 teams competing this weekend at McKendree. The Penguins will compete in Pool B, which has eight ranked teams and another that is receiving votes. Five of the teams are ranked in the top 10: No. 2 Nebraska, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Sam Houston State, No. 7 UMES and No. 10 Central Missouri. Pool position and lane assignments will be drawn at a coaches meeting on Friday morning.
