The Youngstown State bowling team will begin its second season of intercollegiate competition this weekend at the Bud Whitman Memorial tournament in Reading, Pa. The tournament will be hosted by Kutztown University at Berks Lanes. YSU's 10 matches will be streamed live on the YSUsports YouTube Channel (youtube.com/ysusports), and results will also be posted on the team's Twitter account (@YSUBowling)
The Penguins return their top seven bowlers from the 2016-17 season that saw the program finish 25th in the final National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. YSU is No. 24 to open this season with hopes of making a steady climb up the rankings in their second campaign.
Tournament Format: The Bud Whitman Memorial will be comprised of two separate one-day events with awards being done each day. Saturday's competition will be five Baker games beginning at 11 a.m., and Sunday's format will be five traditional matches starting at 9 a.m. The top four teams each day will receive rewards, and the top six bowlers will make the all-tournament team.
Scouting the Field: There will be 19 teams competing on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. Youngstown State is one of eight teams in the field that are ranked in the NTCA Top 25 Poll, and the Penguins will bowl against three ranked opponents. YSU's first match of the season will be against No. 22 Franklin Pierce, and the Penguins will battle No. 12 Delaware State and No. 15 Adelphi on Sunday in traditional play.
Scouting the Penguins: YSU will have seven returners and freshman Emma Dockery in its travel squad for the opening weekend. Three of the returners averaged at least 186 in traditional matches last season, and they are all sophomores in 2017-18. Rachel Darrow averaged a team-high 190.59 and led the squad with 19 games over 200 in 2016-17. Alexis Grim averaged 186.97 and had the highest individual game last year at 258, and Nikki Mendez averaged 186.92. Youngstown State went 7-3 at the Bud Whitman Memorial last year and finished sixth both days. The Penguins beat two ranked teams at the event last year and went on to earn a total of 20 wins over ranked opponents in 2016-17.
Up Next: Youngstown State's next tournament will be at the Brunswick Bearcat Open in Fairview Heights, Ill. The tournament will be hosted by defending national champion McKendree and run Oct. 27-29.
