The Youngstown State bowling team won its first four matches of the day and finished third in total pinfall in the opening day of the Bud Whitman Memorial. The event was held at Berks Lanes in Reading, Pa.
The Penguins totaled 4,881 pins in their 25 Baker games in the first day of the season for an average of 195.24. YSU bowled above 900 in each of their five matches and surpassed 990 three times.
Youngstown State opened the day with a 994-928 over No. 22 Franklin Pierce, and it followed that up with a 908-856 win over Molloy. The Penguins then had their highest five-game set of the day in a 1,026-972 win over Howard, and YSU won its fourth straight match with a 928-845 victory over Roberts Wesleyan. YSU was up 56 pins going into game five against Kutztown, but the Golden Bears shot a 279 in the final game to keep the Penguins from going unbeaten on the day.
Saint Francis U claimed the top spot for the day with a total of 4,950. The Red Flash edged LIU-Brooklyn by six pins, and YSU was third with its 4,881. Delaware State earned the final team award on the first day of the tournament with a 4,861 total for fourth place.
Youngstown State will compete in five traditional matches on Sunday at the Bud Whitman Memorial. The Penguins' first match will begin at 9 a.m. against No. 12 Delaware State. All of YSU's matches will be streamed live on the YSUsports YouTube channel.
