Nikki Mendez finished sixth individually, and the Youngstown State bowling team earned another third-place trophy at the Bud Whitman Memorial on Sunday at Berks Lanes in Reading, Pa.
A day after going 4-1 and finishing third in Baker play, the Penguins went 3-2 on Sunday and placed third in total pinfall again in the opening weekend of the season.
Mendez, a sophomore, rode scores of 246 and 234 in the third and fourth games to finish sixth and earn a spot on the all-tournament team. She totaled 1,035 in YSU's five matches for an average of 207. Freshman Emma Dockery placed ninth in her collegiate debut with an average of 203.8 and all five games above 180. Mackenzie Olesky finished 21st with a 194.2 average, and Rachel Darrow was 41st with a 178.8 average.
Youngstown State's two losses came to tournament winner Delaware State and fifth-place finisher Adelphi. The Penguins and 12th-ranked DSU had to go to a roll-off to decide the winner as both teams finished with a 939, and the Hornets topped YSU 128-74 in the tiebreaker). YSU had its best total of the day in the second match as it edged Chestnut Hill 1,025-1,000, and the Penguins followed that with a 1,002-868 win over Felician. YSU then beat Coppin State 972-730 before finishing the weekend with a 931-873 loss to #15 Adelphi.
Youngstown State's next tournament will be at the Brunswick Bearcat Open in Fairview Heights, Ill. The tournament will be hosted by defending national champion McKendree and run Oct. 27-29.
