The Youngstown State bowling team won a pair of best-of-seven bracket matches on Sunday at the KU Invitational to finish the weekend in 19th place. The tournament was held at Heister Lanes in Reading, Pa., and was hosted by Kutztown.
The Penguins went the distance in all three matches and finished the day the in the same place they were after two days of total pinfall seeding.
YSU led No. 24 Monmouth 3-2 in the first match of the day, but the Hawks rallied to win the final two Baker games and win the match. The Penguins lost the first game of the match by two pins, and each of the first four games against Monmouth was decided by 13 pins or fewer.
The Penguins then traded wins with No. 18 Wisconsin-Whitewater, taking the first, third, fifth and seventh games of the match. The Penguins bowled five games over 200 against the Warhawks, including their highest game of the day at 227.
In the final match of the tournament, Youngstown State trailed St. Francis Brooklyn 3-1 before winning the final three games to secure the match. The Penguins topped 190 in each of their four wins, and they shot at least 201 in each of the final three games.
Youngstown State is idle next weekend and will return to action at the Crusader Classic Feb. 9-11.
