The Youngstown State bowling team had a solid showing with three wins on Friday to start the Columbia 300 Music City Classic. The tournament is being hosted by Vanderbilt in Smyrna, Tenn., at the Smyrna Bowling Center.
The Penguins totaled 4,374 pins in their five Baker matches, which ranks them 20th in total pinfall heading into day two of the tournament. The Penguins went 3-2 in head-to-head contests, beating three unranked opponents and falling to two teams ranked in the top 15. One of those losses was by two pins to No. 14 UAB.
Youngstown State began the day with a 794-715 win over Alabama A&M in what was their lowest set of the day. The Penguins improved to 879 in the second match but lost 1,065-879 to third-ranked Arkansas State. A two-pin, 918-916, loss followed to UAB, and the Penguins had their highest match total of the afternoon with a one-pin, 925-924, victory over Alabama State. The Penguins then beat Felician 860-840 to conclude play on Friday.
No. 2 McKendree went unbeaten in five matches on Friday and sits first in the team standings with 5,043 total pins. Arkansas State went 4-1 and sits just five pins back in second place, and Vanderbilt is third.
The Penguins will compete in five traditional team games on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. YSU will bowl against No. 8 UMES, No. 18 North Carolina A&T, Howard, No. 7 Delaware State and No. 16 Saint Francis U as it tries to move up in the standings prior to Sunday's bracket matches.
