The Youngstown State bowling team earned a long-awaited victory over Delaware State and went 3-2 in five traditional matches on Saturday at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic.
The Penguins beat the seventh-ranked Hornets for the first time in 11 tries, and YSU also earned an impressive 37-pin victory over No. 18 North Carolina A&T on the second day of the tournament. Youngstown State will head into bracket play on Sunday in 19th place in the competitive 32-team field.
YSU's day began with a 960-938 loss to No. 8 UMES, and the victory over North Carolina A&T followed to even the record. The Penguins then defeated Howard 907-857, and they saved their best score of the afternoon for No. 7 Delaware State when it won 1,006-917. YSU fell 969-812 to No. 16 Saint Francis U in the final match.
Ashley Kolb was the Penguins' top individual finisher in 40th with a five-match score of 968, and she had the team's highest game score with a 237 against North Carolina A&T. Emma Dockery bowled at least 172 and peaked at 226 to finish 43rd with a total of 961, and Nikki Mendez was 64th with a 909. Emily Dietz placed 68th just three pins behind Mendez.
Youngstown State will have a rematch with UMES to begin bracket play on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Eastern.
