The Youngstown State bowling team went 4-1 in traditional matches on Saturday and will enter bracket play seeded seventh at the Hawk Flight Invite.
The Penguins entered the day sitting sixth in total pinfall, and six individuals combined to post 4,615 pins over five matches on Saturday.
"The scores aren't reflective of how well the ladies bowled today," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "Our two sets over 960 could have easily been 1,000 plus, but strings are hard to come by in this center. Overall, we competed well and navigated some tough matchups."
"I like how our two best sets were game one on fresh and game five on burn. This is a talented group with lots of versatility. We're enjoying the challenges and having a lot of fun out there competing."
YSU won its first two matches and its last two matches to improve its head-to-head record at the Hawk Flight Invite to 7-3. The Penguins began play with their highest set of the day in a 977-832 win over LIU Post. YSU then topped No. 10 North Carolina A&T 933-915 before falling by five pins, 869-864, to No. 11 Saint Francis U. The Penguins bounced back with an 878-795 win over Morgan State, and they concluded the afternoon with a 963-868 victory over No. 12 Delaware State.
Individually, the four Penguins who bowled all five games finished with 20 pins of each other. Rachel Darrow and Emma Dockery tied with 938 pins to place 20th, and Rachel Ellis placed 23rd just eight pins back. Nikki Mendez finished 26th with a 918, and Emily Dietz and Ashley Kolb combined for an 891 total over five games.
Youngstown State will bowl in three best-of-seven Baker matches on Sunday starting at 8:25 a.m. The Penguins will begin bracket play with a rematch against Delaware State.
