The Youngstown State bowling team had its highest single-match total in program history and picked up a pair of head-to-head victories in the first day of the Kutztown Invitational on Friday at Limerick Bowl.

The Penguins posted a school-record 1,084 pins in their second match of the day against Chestnut Hill. That was the highest match total ever in both Baker format and overall. YSU won its first two matches, bowled at least 922 in all five matches and sits 12th in the 28-team field in total pinfall after the first day.

"I'm proud of the way we battled," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski after his Penguins debut. "Overall, our shot-making was solid and we easily could have gone 4-1, but Kutztown and UMES were able to string some strikes against us. We learned a lot today in terms of how the lanes transition and are looking forward to a solid day tomorrow during conventional play."

The Penguins beat No. 17 Monmouth 943-871 to start the tournament, and they followed that up with their record-breaking 1,084-884 victory over Chestnut Hill. YSU dropped its last three matches of the day, falling 1,049-948 to No. 18 LIU Brooklyn, 973-953 to No. 25 Kutztown and 984-922 to No. 8 UMES.

Youngstown State will compete in five team games on Saturday beginning at 9:25 a.m. Eastern.
