The Youngstown State bowling team is just outside of the top 25 in the National Tenpin Coaches Association's 2018-19 Preseason Poll that was announced last week.

The Penguins sat one spot out of the top 25 and were one of seven additional teams to receive votes in the preseason poll. Youngstown State earned votes in each poll during the 2017-18 campaign and finished ranking 25th in the final poll of 2016-17.

This will be YSU's third season of NCAA competition and its first as a member of the Southland Bowling League. All eight teams in the conference received votes, and six teams are ranked in the top 17. Defending National Champion Vanderbilt is the preseason No. 1, and Sam Houston State, Arkansas State, Stephen F. Austin and Tulane are in the top 10.

Youngstown State returns seven of its nine bowlers from last season, including team MVP Emma Dockery and top average holder Nikki Mendez.

The Penguins will begin the 2017-18 campaign at the two-day Bud Whitman Memorial tournament on Oct. 13-14 at Berks Lanes near Reading, Pa.
