The Youngstown State bowling team beat a top-three team for the first time in program history to highlight a solid first day at the Sunshine State Winter Classic. The tournament is being held at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
The Penguins went 2-3 in head-to-head play against five teams ranked in this month's NTCA Top 25 poll, and they finished the day ranking sixth in the 14-team field in total pinfall. YSU's first win of the day was over No. 3 Nebraska, which is the highest-ranked team that the Penguins have beaten in their three years of competition.
"Our communication was solid all day, and we stayed on top of the adjustments shot-to-shot, lane-to-lane and pair-to-pair," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "I'm really proud of how the ladies stepped up in big moments against some big opponents, and I believe that experience will help us as we head into March. We didn't bowl our best against Sacred Heart the last set, but we've identified some items to work on heading into tomorrow. We have some work to do tomorrow, and we'll be ready to get after it."
The Penguins dropped a close first set 999-978 to No. 9 Tulane, but they rebounded to post their best score of the morning in a narrow 1,011-1,000 victory over the third-ranked Huskers. YSU then fell 1,046-961 to No. 7 Stephen F. Austin in its third match, and a 1,003-909 victory over No. 15 Lincoln Memorial evened the record at 2-2 for the day. The final match resulted in a 918-849 loss to No. 20 Sacred Heart.
