The Youngstown State bowling team finished its three days at the Sunshine State Winter Classic by going 1-2 in bracket play on Sunday. The Penguins placed 10th overall at the tournament held at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

YSU began the day seeded 10th in the best-of-seven Baker bracket, and it beat Prairie View A&M 4-0 to begin the day. The Penguins posted their highest two scores of the morning against the Panthers with a 223 and 224 in the second and third games.

Youngstown State then lost 4-3 to No. 14 UAB in a seven-game battle that featured several close scores. YSU lost game one by five pins, and the Penguins took games two and five by 20 pins total. The Blazers shot 257 and 266 in the final two games to rally from being down 3-2 in the match.

YSU’s last match at the tournament resulted in a 4-1 loss to No. 12 Delaware State, and the first two games that the Penguins lost were decided by a total of 16 pins.

"While the outcome was disappointing, we have plenty of positives to take away from this weekend," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "We beat some quality opponents and took UAB to seven games. Outside of two sets, we were a top-six team. As a group, we've identified some items to work on to elevate our game moving forward and find more consistency from set one to set five. Our goal is to peak in March heading into conference. With some solid work over the next six weeks, I know we can get there."

Youngstown State will not compete the next two weekends, and will begin a busy March at the Hawk Flight Invite on March 1 at King Pin Lanes in Egg Harbor Township, N.J.
