The Youngstown State bowling team earned three straight wins over teams in the top 17 of the NTCA Poll to finish a solid first day at the Track Kat Klash. The tournament is being held at Emerald Lanes in Houston.
The Penguins finished Baker play with a 3-2 record in head-to-head matches and sitting eighth overall in a field loaded with some of the top teams in the country. YSU improved its score each match, starting with an 811 and jumping all the way up to 953 in the fifth contest.
Youngstown State got its first win over a top-five opponent in program history to put an exclamation point on the day as it beat No. 4 Sam Houston State 900-822 in the fourth match. The Penguins started their three-match winning streak with a narrow 886-880 nod over No. 16 UAB, and they ended it with a 953-905 victory against No. 17 Louisiana Tech. YSU fell 956-811 to No. 3 Nebraska in the opening match, and it was edged 893-880 by No. 23 Monmouth in the second match.
Youngstown State finished the day with 4,430 pins, which was two better than ninth-place Sam Houston State. The Penguins topped 200 twice in Baker games, rolling a 219 in the win over Louisiana tech and a 212 against Monmouth.
YSU will bowl five team games on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. The Penguins will compete against Maryville in a positional game to start the day, then they'll take on Grambling, No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, No. 25 Texas Southern and Alabama State.
