The Youngstown State bowling team will begin a busy November as it heads to Emerald Lanes in Houston for the TRACK Kat Klash this weekend. The Penguins will bowl 13 matches over the three-day tournament hosted by Sam Houston State, and each of the matches will be streamed live on the YSUsports YouTube Channel, pending the wireless signal.
Tournament Format: The TRACK Kat Klash will follow a standard three-day tournament with five Baker games on Friday, five team games on Saturday and three best-of-seven bracket matches on Sunday. Baker play on Friday will begin at 10:55 a.m. Eastern, and Saturday's team games will start at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. Saturday's opening match will be a pool positional round. Sunday's bracket competition will start at 9:20 a.m. Eastern.
Scouting the Penguins: Youngstown State went 6-4 in head-to-head matches at the season-opening Bud Whitman Memorial three weeks ago. The Penguins won their first four matches of the campaign by beating Molloy, Howard, Caldwell and Penn State-Behrend in Baker competition, and they earned wins over Daemen and Coppin State in team play. YSU placed 10th in total pinfall during both days at the tournament. Junior Nikki Mendez was YSU's top individual finisher with a 24th-place total of 894, and she was followed by Rachel Ellis (874), Emma Dockery (865), Rachel Darrow (831) and Emily Dietz (831). Each of those bowlers return from last season, and Mendez, Ellis, Darrow, Dietz and Ashley Kolb are all in the third seasons with the program.
Scouting the Field: Youngstown State will be one of 18 teams in a field that includes some of the top programs in the country this weekend in Houston. Seven of the top 10 teams from the Preseason National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 Poll will compete at the tournament, and 15 of the 18 teams at least received votes in the poll. The Penguins are in Pool A, and it will compete against all nine teams in Pool B in the first two days. Teams in Pool B include No. 3 Nebraska, No. 4 Sam Houston State, No. 6 Stephen F. Austin, No. 16 UAB, No. 17 Louisiana Tech, No. 23 Monmouth, No. 25 Texas Southern, Grambling and Alabama State. YSU will be one of six teams from the Southland Bowling League in the field.
