Youngstown State head women's golf coach Nate Miklos has been named the Horizon League Coach of the Year, the league office announced on Saturday.
This is the third time in his career, and the second time during his tenure at YSU that Miklos has earned recognition from the league. He was previously named the Horizon League Co-Coach of the Year while at Loyola in 2004 and in 2017 during his fourth season with the Penguins.
In his sixth season, Miklos has guided the Penguins to one of the best seasons in program history. The team has won four events, and set new school records for lowest 18-hole, 36-hole and 54-hole performance. This season marks just the fifth time in school history that the program has won at least four tournaments. Miklos also coached YSU to four wins in 2014-15 and 2015-16.
YSU began the season with a dominating win at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational and finished the fall with another impressive victory at the Dayton Fall Invitational. At the Roseann Schwartz Invitational, the Penguins finished ahead of second-place Marshall by 15 strokes and had three golfers finish in the top 10. At Dayton, YSU earned a five-stroke victory over Findlay and again had three golfers place in the top 10.
The Penguins also won a pair of events during the spring slate. The squad earned an 11-stroke victory and had four players finish in the top 10 at the Benbow Invitational in March. Four Penguins also finished top-10 in a 10-stroke win at the YSU Spring Invitational last week. Youngstown State has finished first or second in seven of its 11 events this season.
Miklos helped a school-record four Penguins earn all-league honors this season. Katlyn Shutt and Puthita Khuanrudee were each named First-Team All-Horizon League, and Khuanrudee was named Freshman of the Year. In addition, freshmen Victoria Grans and Rattika Sittigool were each named Second-Team All-Horizon League. This is the first time in Horizon League history that a team has had three freshmen garner all-league recognition. At least one Penguin has earned All-Horizon League honors in each of Miklos' six seasons leading the program, and he has now had at least one first-team honoree in four straight campaigns.
Under Miklos' leadership, Youngstown State has set numerous individual and team school records this season. The team has also achieved the program's highest-ever Golfstat national scoring ranking. The Penguins have been ranked as high as 123 this season, surpassing the previous mark of 139, set in 1996-97. YSU enters this week's league championship event with a ranking of 133, which is 37 spots higher than any other Horizon League team. Two YSU golfers earned Nike Horizon League Women's Golfer of the Week honors during the campaign. Shutt won the award on February 27 and April 17, and Grans claimed the honor on March 20.
YSU has carded the seven lowest 18-hole team scores in program history this season, besting the previous record of 296 which was set in 2015. The team's 2-under-par 286 at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational was the first team round of par or better in school history. The Guins have gone on to post three rounds of par or better, and the six lowest rounds in relation to par in YSU women's golf history.
