Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. - The Youngstown State women's golf team opened its spring season with a second-place finish in the Motor City Cup match play event at Mission Inn Resort & Club on Tuesday.
YSU and Oakland finished the championship match in a 3-3 tie, but the Golden Grizzlies won the tiebreaker by one hole (9-8 net holes won) to claim the tournament victory. Katlyn Shutt (5 and 4), Rattika Sittigool (1-up) and Jenna Vivo (2 and 1) each recorded individual wins in the final round.
"We played really well the past two days and just lost a tough match," said Head Coach Nate Miklos. "We have some tough competition in the conference this year, and I think this will serve as a great learning experience as we continue working to get better each day."
Ranked as the top-overall seed in the tournament bracket, YSU earned a pair of 5-1 wins over Horizon League foes UIC and IUPUI in the first two rounds on Monday to advance to Tuesday's title match.
In the first-round match against eighth-seeded UIC, Victoria Grans (4 and 3), Puthita Khuanrudee (7 and 5), Sittigool (4 and 3) and Megan Creager (5 and 4) each earned individual wins while Shutt and Vivo tied their matches. The 5-1 win advanced YSU into the championship bracket for a semifinal matchup with fourth-seeded IUPUI, who bested Northern Kentucky 4.5-1.5 in its first-round match.
The Penguins also topped the Jaguars 5-1 as Grans (1-up), Khuanruee (8 and 6), Sittigool (4 and 3), Vivo (3 and 2) and Creager (1-up) were each victorious. The other semifinal match between Oakland and Loyola-Chicago finished Tuesday morning after being suspended Monday evening due to darkness. The Golden Grizzlies ultimately bested the Ramblers 4.5-1.5 to advance to the championship with YSU.
All six YSU golfers won at least one individual match, five Penguins notched at least two individual wins and Sittigool went a perfect 3-0.

Loyola-Chicago beat IUPUI 4-2 on Tuesday to claim third-place honors in the championship bracket. In the consolation bracket, Creighton topped UIC 4-1-1 to finish fifth while Northern Kentucky swept Valparaiso 6-0 in the seventh-place match.
The Penguins will be back in action Feb. 24-26 at the Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Classic at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, S.C.
