The Youngstown State women's soccer team continues its string of road matches when it visits Central Michigan, Friday, Aug. 26, and Duquesne, Sunday, Aug. 28. The Penguins and Chippewas kickoff at 6 p.m. while the match against the Dukes has a 1 p.m. start.
Last Time Out
The Penguins are coming off a hard-fought 1-0 win over Robert Morris in the season opener on Aug. 19. Junior Kyler Lum in the 63rd minute off a pass from freshman Larsen Murvin for the match's only goal. Senior goalkeeper Katie Montgomery recorded her first shutout of the season.
About Central Michigan
Central Michigan enters the match with a 2-0 record after defeating Duquesne, 2-0, on Aug. 19, and Robert Morris, 3-1, on Aug. 21. Alexis Pelafas leads the Chippewas with four goals while Jamie Rademacher scored the other CMU goal. Goalkeeper Kristen Knutson has a 2-0 record with a shutout and a .857 save percentage.
The CMU Series
This is third meeting between Youngstown State and Central Michigan in a series that dates back to 1998. CMU won the last meeting, 2-0, in 2015 at Farmers National Bank Field.
Duquesne enters the week with a 1-1 overall mark after falling to Central Michigan, 2-0, and defeating Pittsburgh, 2-0, on Aug. 21. Katie O'Connor and Malea Fabian have each scored a goal for Duquesne. Goalkeeper Kyra Murphy has 12 saves on the year with a shutout and a 1-1 record.
The Duquesne Series
This is the ninth meeting between Youngstown State and Duquesne in a series that dates back to 1996. Duquesne owns a 7-1 advantage in the all-time series and won the last meeting, 3-0, in 2014. The only time the Penguins defeated Duquesne was a 1-0 victory in 2012 at Stambaugh Stadium.
The Penguins will play their fourth straight road match against IPFW, Friday, Sept. 2, at 11:30 a.m. at Indiana Tech. The Penguins host Longwood, Sunday, Sept. 4, at Noon in the 2016 home opener.
Montgomery Named Defensive POW
For the second time in her career, senior goalkeeper Katie Montgomery has been named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The Mariposa, Calif., native recorded six saves and registered her first shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Robert Morris on Aug. 19. The win marks the seventh of her career and her fifth career shutout, which ranks tied for third all-time. She also became the 11th YSU goalkeeper to record at least 100 saves and now has 104. She needs five more to move into 10th place on the career saves list.
Five players made their Youngstown State debuts against Robert Morris. Those making their first appearance include Ernestina Abambila, Shani Jefferson, Amanda Lopez, Larsen Murvin, and Meghan Wallace. All five players also started the match.
Lum Picking Up From Last Season
Junior Kyler Lum is picking up where she left off last season. Lum scored the Penguins only goal against Robert Morris on Aug. 19. In 2015, she led the team with four goals and 10 total points. For her career, she now has five goals scored.
