Penguins Draw With Marshall in Final Exhibition Game

Youngstown, Ohio - The Youngstown State women's soccer team earned themselves a 1-1 double overtime tie against Marshall in their final exhibition game.

With the match only 14 minutes in, a storm system rolled in causing the game to be delayed an hour and 15 minutes. 

When played resumed, the Thundering Herd got on the board first with a goal from Marah Abu-Tayeh in the 24th minute. 

In the first half, sophmore goalkeeper Kate McEachern recorded one save while the Penguins had shots from freshman midfielder Luca Fahmer and and junior midfielder Rasheda Abdul-Rahman

McEachern was replaced in the second half by freshman goalkeeper Zeeyana Jivraj. Jivraj who had a stellar performance the rest of the way, making six saves during regular and extra time. 

Sophomore midfielder Sammy Salatino played hero for the Penguins when she scored a goal in the 80th minute on a corner kick to tie the game at 1-1. 

With the teams tied at the end of regualtion, two 10 minute overtime periods were played to decide a winner. After 20 extra minutes, the game ended in a tie as neither team was able to net a goal. 

YSU outshot Marshall 12-11 and held the advantage in corners, 2-1.

Youngstown State opens regular season play on Friday, August 17, at 7 p.m. The Penguins will host Chicago State at Farmers National Bank Field in the Covelli Sports Complex.
