Youngstown, Ohio - A goal in the 36th minute was all Akron needed as they defeated the Youngstown State women's soccer team by a score of 1-0 on Friday evening from Farmers National Bank Field in the Covelli Sports Complex.
The Zips improve to 2-3 while the Penguins drop to 1-4.
YSU applied the pressure early when a header from Raquel Costa Correia was saved by the Akron goal keeper just nine seconds into the match. The Penguins had another scoring opportunity at the 2:28 mark when a strike from Marcella Sizer went just wide right of the net.
Akron dominated possesion of the ball after the first 15 minutes of game and was able to take a 1-0 lead on goal from Bailee Bowers in the 36th minute.
For the half, the Zips outshot the Penguins 7-4 while also producing more corner kick opportunities, 4-0. Kate McEachern recorded three saves while Regan LaVigna, Marcella Sizer, Larsen Murvin and Costa Correia each registered a shot.
In the second half, YSU possed the ball for a majority of time and had a number of scoring chances, but were unable to find the net. It started in the 65th minute when a header from Larsen Murvin hit the cross bar, followed by a rebound shot from Sizer that sailed over the net. Sizer put a header on net in the 86th minute and Abriana Rondin got a shot on goal just minute later but both shots were saved by the Zips keeper.
For the game, both teams recorded 12 shots but Akron had more corner kick opportunities, 7-2. The Penguins got shots from LaVigna (3), Sizer (3), Rondin (3), Murvin (2) and Costa Correia (1) while McEachern finished the contest with four saves.
The Penguins are back in action Sunday as they travel to St Francis (Pa.) to battle the Red Flash at 2 p.m. from the Stokes Soccerplex.
