Sizer Scores Late as Penguins Comeback Effort Falls Short

Youngstown, Ohio - Marcella Sizer scored her fifth goal of the season in the 84th minute but the Penguins were unable to score an equalizer, ultimately falling to Green Bay 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field in the Covelli Sports Complex.

The Phoenix improve to 7-6-1 overall (1-3-1 Horizon League) while the Penguins drop to 3-10-1 (1-4 Horizon League). 

The first 20 minutes of the match featured a large amount of midfield play between both teams before the Penguins got a scoring opportunity from Sizer at the 20:26 mark. Sizer fired a shot from the top of the box but it was tipped clear of the goal by the Phoenix goalkeeper.

Green Bay took a 1-0 lead five minutes later when McKayla Kertscher connected with Caitlin Hawley on through ball before she swung a pass into the box for Jordyn Cook, who put in the back of the net at the 25:13 mark. 

At the half, the Phoenix were outshooting the Penguins 5-3 but the Guins produced more corner kick opportunities, 3-1. McEachern finished the first 45 minutes with a pair of saves.

Green Bay extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second half when Alyssa Barnes dished a pass to Morgan Courier who was able to find the back of the net in the 61st minute.

The Penguins applied offensive pressure for the remainder of the match and were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the 84th minute on Sizer's goal. Regan LaVigna placed the free kick in perfect position for Sizer to head into the backof the net.

LaVigna, who nearly scored the equalizer on a shot in that sailed just wide of the net in the 86th minute, picked up her fourth assist of the season which ties the freshman record.

For the game, Green Bay held the advantage in shots 10-9 but the Penguins had more corners, 7-3. McEachern finished the contest with four saves whule LaVigna and Sizer each recorded three shots.

The Penguins close out their three-game home stretch next weekend when they host UIC on Saturday, October 19 at Farmers National Bank Field.
