Youngstown, Ohio - The Youngstown State women's soccer opened the 2019 season with a 2-1 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday evening at Farmers National Bank Field in the Covelli Sports Complex.
Marcella Sizer's goal in the 51st minute proved to be the game-winner as the Penguins win their season opener for the first time since 2016.
YSU improves to 1-0 while the Mastodons drop to 0-1.
During the first half, Zeeyana Jivraj was stout in goal for the Penguins recording seven saves. The Mastodons outshot the Penguins 12-5 in the first 45 minutes while each team had two corners.
Purdue Fort Wayne opened the second half with a goal in the 49th minute off the foot of Eliese LaCourt to tie the game at 1-1. Just two minutes later, Sizer's goal put the Penguins ahead 2-1 after she dribbled the ball with defenders draped all over her from just inside the midfield line into the box before firing a strike into the back of the net.
For the game, the Mastodons outshot the Penguins 23-13 and had more shots on goal, 9-4. Purdue Fort Wayne also held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2. LaVigna led the Penguins with a team-high three shots while Jivraj finished the game nine saves.
The Penguins return to the pitch on Sunday, August 25 when they host St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. from Farmers National Bank Field.
