The Youngstown State swimming and diving team plays host to their final home dual meet of the season when the Penguins play host to Ohio at the Beeghly Natatorium. The meet is set to start at 5 p.m. on Friday. It will be carried live on the Horizon League Network.
Prior to the beginning of the dual, Youngstown State seniors Jennifer Johnstone and Hilary Barrett will be honored. Johnstone, a breaststroker from Bolivar, Ohio, has not swam this season because of injuries. Last year she set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Horizon League Championships. Barrett, a distance freestyle swimmer who also competes in the IM, ranks fourth in school history in the 400 IM, sixth in the 1,650 free and seventh in the 1,000 freestyle.
It is the first meet of the 2010 calendar year for both programs. YSU's last competition was at the Radford Invitational on Nov. 19-21. The Bobcats had a strong showing last time out winning the Akron Invitational which concluded on Dec. 6. Ohio placed second at last year's Mid-American Conference Championships after winning the meet in 2008.
The Penguins and Bobcats have meet on several occasions in recent years. YSU lost 117-88 last year to the Bobcats at Beeghly. In 2008, Ohio defeated the Penguins 134-87 in Athens. At Beeghly in 2007, YSU dropped a 135-100 dual to the Bobcats. During the 2005-06 season, the schools competed at Akron in a double dual with the Zips. In 2004-05, the Bobcats defeated YSU 151-91 in Athens. In 2002-02, OU defeated the Guins 124-85.
Youngstown State returns to action on Jan. 16 when it travels to Loretto, Pa., for a dual meet versus Saint Francis (Pa.).
