Penguins Open 2017-18 Season With Meet at Akron

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team, under first-year coach Ryan Purdy, opens it season on Friday at Akron. The dual at Ocasek Natatorium begins at 5 p.m.

The Penguins return veterans Madison Aranda, Bethany Glick, Kolbrun Jonsdottir, Viktoria Orosz, Rachel Shipp and McKenzie Stelter while Purdy will be making his YSU debut.

Orosz, Aranda and Jonsdottir have been mainstays in the lineup throughout their careers. Orosz had three top-seven finishes at the Horizon League Championships in 2017 and has nine in her career. During her career she has been solid in the backstroke and the distance freestyle for the Guins. Aranda has had eight top-seven finishes as a distance freestyle swimmer at the Horizon League meet during her Penguins' career. Jonsdottir has been one of the team's top finishers in sprint freestyle events. Shipp will be a key member for the Penguins in butterfly.

Glick and Stelter will lead the YSU divers. Glick and Stelter had their best seasons of their Penguins' career last season. Stelter placed fourth in both the one-meter and three-meter dives while Glick placed fifth in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events at the HL meet last year.

Other top returners for the Penguins include Rhianna Acosta, Taylor Bishop, Isabella Davis, Haley Fisher, Paris Krug, Natalie LaurenceTiphaine Saint-GillesMegan Stelpflug and Taylor Tofil.

Set to make their YSU debuts on Friday are Sydney Gonzalez, Shayanna HollowAida Jurinovics, Kat KellerJamie LemingBori Szalai and Natalie Yehle.

The Penguins are at home for the first time on Saturday, Oct. 21 against Ohio.
