The Youngstown State swimming and diving team will play host to Big Ten member Illinois and defending Horizon League Champion Oakland at a newly-renovated Beeghly Natatorium in 2018-19. The Penguins released their upcoming schedule on Thursday.
Second-year Head Coach Ryan Purdy said he's anxious to the see the new-look facility and face some high-level competition this season.
"I'm really looking forward to competing against the teams that are on our schedule for this upcoming season," Purdy said. "Competing against these quality programs will only help the development of our own program here at YSU. We also have some great home meets that will give everyone a chance to come out to support the Swimming and Diving program against some great competition."
In October, YSU plays host to Duquesne (Oct. 13) and Oakland (Oct. 20). The Penguins then have dual meets against Cleveland State, Toledo, Marshall and Bowling Green before returning to Cleveland to compete in the three-day Magnus Invitational on Nov. 16-18.
Once the spring semester starts, the Penguins will host a two-day YSU Quad Meet before competing in a dual at Ohio and at the Butler Invitational. Highlighting the YSU Quad Meet on Jan. 19-20 will be a visit to Youngstown by Illinois.
"We have added schools like Toledo, Bowling Green and Marshall to the schedule. There are great Division I programs in our region, and I thank those coaches for giving us the opportunity to compete against them," Purdy said. "Testing ourselves with a challenging schedule will hopefully give us a ton of confidence heading into the Horizon League Championship meet in Indianapolis in February. Our program's goal is to start moving up in the final conference standings."
