The Youngstown State women's tennis team opens Horizon League play on Saturday at the Boardman Tennis Center. The Penguins are 8-7 while the Titans enter the dual at 5-3. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
The eight wins are the most for the program since 2008-09 when the Guins won 11. The Penguins already have seven more wins from last year.
At No. 1 Paula de Man has been impressive to say the least. de Man is 13-1 at No. 1 singles since joining the program in January. Her lone loss was to the 46th-ranked player in the country, Ohio State's Kelsey Dieters.
At No. 3, Marta Burak has won five straight matches and is 12-3 in dual play so far this season. At No. 3 singles, Burak owns an 11-2 record. Her 18 wins on the season are one shy of her total from last year and just three shy of the school record of 21. Her 37 career victories already rank her 10th in school history in career victories.
At No. 2, two-time first-team all-league selection Margarita Sadovnikova is 13-11 this year, including a 7-6 mark in dual competition. Freshman Annina Brendel has also reached double figures in wins with 13.
Detroit has won five straight duals and has two players who will be carrying five-match winning streaks into the contest - Chloe Karoub and Irina Slizovskaya.
YSU last beat the Titans in April 2006 and has dropped the last six decisions in the series. It also marks the first time since 2006-07 the Penguins open league play at home and the last time YSU won its HL opener was in 2008-09.
The Penguins are 3-0 at the Boardman Tennis Center this year.
