Penguins Earn Gritty Season-Opening Win Over Eastern Michigan

Boardman - The Youngstown State women's tennis team opened the dual portion of its season with a 4-3 win over Eastern Michigan on Friday night at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The Penguins (1-0) won the doubles point by winning two of the three matches before winning matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Earning singles wins were Dominika Lackova, Noelly Nsimba and Sofia Macias.

At No. 1 singles, Lackova defeated Marie Mayerova 6-3, 7-5. At No. 2 singles, Nsimba defeated Andrea Martinovska 6-1, 7-6. At No. 3, Macias beat Ani Goguadze 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles play, YSU won at No. 2 and No. 3 to earn the point. At No. 2, Macias and Imaan Hassim won 6-1 while at No. 3, Cassandra Moraleja and Nsimba won a 7-6 (2) match over Anna Veleva and Renu Sharma.

The Guins had two three-set losses in singles at No. 4 and No. 6. Ana Stroe dropped a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 decision to Veleva at No. 4 and newcomer Moraleja lost a 6-7, 3-6, 7-6 contest to Alejandra Barcelo at No. 6.

It marks the first win over Eastern Michigan in school history for YSU.

The Penguins are in action next Friday when they play host to Niagara at the Boardman Tennis Center.
