Hassim's Victory Propels Penguins to 4-3 Win at Northern Kentucky

Highland Heights, Ky. - The Youngstown State women's tennis team outlasted Northern Kentucky 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Yeager Tennis Complex.

The contest went to the third set of the final match before Imaan Hassim prevailed and helped lead the Penguins to dual victory. YSU improves to 9-8 overall and 3-1 in the Horizon League. NKU drops to 4-8 and 1-3.

The Guins won the doubles point before splitting the six singles contests.

In doubles play, YSU picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to earn the point. At No. 2, Hassim and Macias picked up a 6-3 win while at No. 3, Dominika Lackova and Nehel Sahni earned a 6-4 win to clinch the point.

Singles action featured wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 for the Guins while the Norse won at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3.

First to clinch for the Penguins was Sahni who won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. The Norse won the next two matches before Ana Stroe won 6-2, 6-2 over Sierra Nellessen.

At No. 3, Sofia Macias dropped a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 decision to Sydney Powers. Hassim won her first set 6-1 before dropping the second 6-2 to Katja Dijannezevic. In the third set, Hassim and Dijannezevic were tied 4-4 before the final two points were in favor of YSU to claim the win.

The Penguins are next in action on Saturday when they play host to Detroit.
