Indianapolis, Ind. - The Youngstown State women's tennis team earned its second straight Horizon League regular-season title with a 6-1 win over IUPUI today at the West Indy Racquet Club. The Penguins finished HL play with an 8-1 mark and tie UIC for the conference championship.
The Penguins finish the regular season with a 14-10 overall mark while going 8-1 in Horizon League play. YSU ties UIC for a share of the league's regular-season title and will the No. 2 seed at the Horizon League Championships which start on Friday in West Lafayette, Ind., at Purdue University. The Guins get a bye to the semifinals and will first be in action on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
At IUPUI on Sunday, the Guins won the doubles point by taking two of three matches and winning five singles matches.
YSU picked up doubles wins at No. 2 and No. 3 against the Jaguars. At No. 3, Noelly Longi Nsimba and Lucia Zagar won 6-3 while IUPUI won at No. 1, 7-5. At No. 2 doubles, Ana Stroe and Anastasiia Khokhlova won 7-6 (1) to clinch the point for YSU.
The lone YSU defeat in singles came at No. 5 when Cassandra Moraleja retired.
At No. 3 Khokhlova beat Samantha Mayer 6-1, 6-1. At No. 6, Stroe stepped into the lineup and picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Marina Schneiger. Tamara Teufl moved up to No. 4 singles and earned a 6-2, 7-5 win over Mariella Pessina.
Sofia Macias and Nsimba each earned hard-fought wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. At No. 2, Macias knocked off Krystal Grubb 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 while at No. 1, Nsimba rallied to defeat Valeriia Lavrenchuk 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
For the season, Khohlova and Macias each posted an 8-1 record in Horizon League matches to lead the Penguins.
