Penguins Begin Quest For Third Straight HL Title With Trip to Wisconsin

The Youngstown State women's tennis team begins its quest for a third consecutive Horizon League Championship with matches at Green Bay and Milwaukee this weekend.

The Penguins take on the Phoenix (3-7) at 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday at the Western Racquet and Fitness Club. On Sunday, YSU will face the Panthers (7-6) at 1 p.m. at the River Glen Elite Club. Milwaukee faces Cleveland State on Saturday before playing host the Guins.

YSU has faced a rugged non-conference schedule as it enters Horizon League play. The Penguins' most recent five opponents have a combined record of 60-19. The Guins dropped a 5-2 contest to Akron on Tuesday. YSU won two of three matches to claim the doubles point while Lisa Khamassi picked up the victory.

In Horizon League play the past four seasons, YSU is a combined 31-4 in Horizon League matches and is 16-2 the past two years. Imaan Hassim owns a 14-3 mark in Horizon League matches while Cassandra Moraleja is 6-3. Sophomore Tamara Teufl was 6-3 last year. Lucia Zagar, Claudia Barboza and Lisa Khamassi have yet to play a Horizon League match in their careers.

  • The Penguins lead the all-time series with Green Bay, 16-5, and have won the past six meetings. YSU has won the last five meetings by a 7-0 score.
  • YSU leads the all-time series with Milwaukee 14-7. The Penguins have won the last four meetings with the Panthers' last win coming on April 12, 2014.
