The Youngstown State women's tennis team faces key Horizon League contests at Northern Kentucky and Wright State starting on Friday.
The Penguins (4-16 overall and 1-4 in the Horizon League) take on the Norse (6-9, 2-3) at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Lindner Tennis Center at Lunken in Cincinnati, Ohio. On Saturday, the Penguins tangle with the Raiders (12-12 and 3-2) at 2 p.m. at the South Regency Tennis and Fitness Center in Miamisburg, Ohio.
With just four league matches remaining, the Penguins are a match behind the Norse for the final spot in the Horizon League Tournament. The top six teams advance to the league meet and the Penguins will be looking to snap a four-match winless streak on Friday. Last weekend the Guins dropped tough 4-3 contests to Detroit Mercy and to Oakland. The Guins battled make to tie the Golden Grizzlies at 3-3 before dropping the final point.
In the last contest at NKU in 2017, Imaan Hassim won the clinching match for the Penguins in a 4-3 victory.
In League play this year, Elvira Esteo and Lisa Khamassi lead the team with three singles wins. The Penguins have been strong in doubles earning the doubles point in four of the five league contests. The Guins won the doubles point in each of the last two matches, before dropping four singles contests. Winning singles against Detroit Mercy were Esteo and Khamassi while Teufl and Lucia Zagar won contests vs. the Golden Grizzlies.
Following this weekend, YSU returns home to conclude the regular season against UIC and IUPUI.
- The Penguins are 3-0 all-time against NKU, including a 5-2 victory last April. The Guins' lone trip to NKU in April 2017 resulted in a 4-3 victory.
- YSU has won nine straight matches against Wright State dating back 2013. In the all-time series, the Guins own a 22-15 lead.
