Streetsboro, Ohio - The Youngstown State women's tennis team won the doubles point and a pair of singles matches in a tough 4-3 loss to Oakland on Sunday afternoon at the Western Reserve Racquet Club.
The Penguins came out strong winning the doubles points and building a 3-2 lead in the match against the Golden Grizzlies. However, Oakland won the final two matches in three sets to knock off the Penguins.
In singles play, Oakland earned victories at No. 4 and No. 1 singles to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Guins picked up a win at No. 5 as Lucia Zagar earned a 7-5, 6-1 win over Amanda Nilsson. At No. 3, Teufl dropped her first set 6-1 to Dasha Artamonova before regrouping to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-1 as YSU surged to a 3-2 lead.
At No. 2 Lisa Khamassi won her first set against Darya Maltseva, 6-2. Khamassi led 4-1 in the second set before falling 7-6 to Maltseva. In the third, the contest was tied 2-2 before Maltseva won the final four points for a 6-2 win and tie the contest at three.
The lone remaining match was at No. 5 between Elvira Esteo and Sophia Borcuti. Esteo won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second 6-4. In the third, Esteo trailed 4-2 before winning the next two points to tie the contest. However, Borcuti broke Esteo's serve to go up 5-4 and held serve for a 6-4 third set win to claim the match.
YSU returns to action on Friday when it visits Northern Kentucky.
