Penguins Drop 4-3 Decision to Detroit Mercy

Streetsboro, Ohio - The Youngstown State women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Detroit Mercy on Saturday night at the Western Reserve Racquet Club.

The loss drops the Penguins to 4-15 overall and 1-3 in the Horizon League while Detroit Mercy improves to 9-8 and 2-3. 

YSU came up short in doubles dropping two of the three contests. Tamara Teufl and Imaan Hassim cruised to a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, but Detroit Mercy won 6-4 at No. 2 and earned the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.

The Penguins claimed the first singles victory of the match at No. 6. Lucia Zagar defeated Pauline Van Herck by a score of 6-2, 6-1.

The Titans earned wins at No. 4 and No. 1 singles to build a 3-1 advantage. At No. 1, Hassim dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision while Cassandra Moraleja lost 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 2, Lisa Khamassi picked up a key won for the Penguins. Khamassi won 6-3, 7-6 (5) over Iris Thioux to pull the Guins within 3-2.

The decisive match was at No. 3. Tamara Teufl lost her first set 6-3 before regrouping to take the second 6-3. In a back-and-fourth third with Chelsea Apawti, Teufl dropped a tough 6-4 contest. 

At No. 5, Elvira Esteo picked up a 6-4, 7-6, 10-7 win over Sophie Torcello to close out the match. 

The Penguins return to action on Sunday when they play host to Oakland. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in Streetsboro.
