The Youngstown State women's tennis team is in action against UIC on Friday and IUPUI on Saturday in their final two matches of the season.
The Penguins (4-18 overall and 1-6 in the Horizon League) face the Flames (17-4 and 7-0) on Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Western Reserve Racquet Club in Streetsboro before taking on IUPUI (6-14 and 2-5) on Saturday night at 7 at the Avalon Athletic Club in Boardman.
YSU has been on the short end of some recent heartbreakers. The Penguins have dropped their last four matches by 4-3 scores and three have been decided on the final singles match. The Guins had never dropped four straight contests by a 4-3 margin in school history until this month.
The Penguins face a stiff test on Friday against UIC. The Flames have won 15 straight dating back to Feb. 9. YSU defeated UIC in the championship match of the Horizon League Tournament last April, 4-1. The Guins beat IUPUI, 6-1, last year in what was also its final match of the regular season.
Last time out, the Penguins dropped a 4-3 contest to Wright State last Saturday. Against the Raiders, Imaan Hassim, Tamara Teufl and Lucia Zagar all won singles matches. In the 4-3 loss at NKU last Friday, Zagar and Cassandra Moraleja won singles tilts and the Guins won the doubles point. YSU dropped a pair of matches by 7-6 scores in the third set.
Zagar has been a bright spot for the Guins this spring. She is tied for the team lead with nine wins and has a best record of 4-1 in singles contests. During HL play in doubles, the Guins are 11-7 overall.
- Against IUPUI, the Penguins are 8-2 all-time.
- Against UIC, YSU has lost the last three regular-season matches, but won the most recent contest in last year's Horizon League semifinals. In the all-time series, YSU trails 20-5.
