Aly Ryan had 12 kills, and the Youngstown State volleyball team hit .304 collectively to beat Colgate in its final match of the Pitt/Duquesne Invitational on Saturday. The set scores were 25-17, 24-26, 25-22, 25-17.
The Penguins lost earlier in the day in five sets to Duquesne, 25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12.
Ryan, an all-tournament team selection, finished a solid weekend in which she averaged 2.67 kills on a .364 attack percentage and 1.08 blocks in three matches. Lauren Thompson and Ryan both had 12 kills versus Colgate, and four more Penguins had at least seven kills in a balanced attack. YSU hit .448, .308 and .382 in its four set wins.
Youngstown State outhit Duquesne .236 to .217, but the Penguins had 11 serving errors and had three fewer aces (9-6) than the Dukes. Sarah Varcolla tied for match-high honors with 16 kills, and Nikki Thompson registered 26 digs in the five-set loss.
YSU held a 19-14 edge in the opening set, but Duquesne scored 11 of the next 13 points to win 25-21. Youngstown State went on to take the next two sets, but the Dukes claimed the final two. The final set was tied at 12-12 after a Varcolla kill before Duquesne scored the last three points.
Youngstown State will have just one day off before playing a match at Canisius on Monday at 2 p.m.
