Sam Brown posted 11 kills and 13 points for the Youngstown State volleyball team as the Penguins fell in three sets to Cleveland State on Friday evening at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-22, 25-12, 25-17.
Brown had her best match so far in YSU's Horizon League schedule with 11 kills and just one error in 27 attempts for a .370 attack percentage. She added one of four of YSU's aces and also had two blocks. Sarah Varcolla had 10 kills, and Lauren Blanco registered 15 digs.
Cleveland State had four players with at least eight kills. Setter Gina Kilner had eight kills in 16 attempts with 28 assists and seven digs.
The first set featured 12 ties and six lead changes, and Youngstown State's final advantage came at 17-16. After a Margaux Thompson kill tied the score for the final time at 18, Cleveland State went on a three-point spurt to go up 21-18 and led for the remainder of the set.
The Vikings scored eight straight points to seize control early in the second set, but the third set was tight again with nine ties and five lead changes. Youngstown State led 14-11 in the third, but Cleveland State went on a 10-1 run out of a timeout. YSU's final lead came on a Varcolla kill that made the score 15-14, and the Vikings scored the next seven points on Kilner's serve to pull ahead.
Youngstown State will play at Oakland on Sunday at 4 p.m.
