The Youngstown State volleyball team will get their first taste of fall competition on Friday at Duquesne. The Penguins and Dukes will scrimmage at the Palumbo Center at 6 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, YSU will host its annual Alumni Match at the Beeghly Center.

The Alumni Match is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday and admission is free.

The Penguins open the regular season on Friday, August 25 when they play Morehead State and Winthrop at the MSU Eagle Challenge.

Preseason Team Notes

  • YSU enters its sixth season under Coach Mark Hardaway in 2017 and its fourth with assistant coach Sarah Smith.
  • The Penguins have five seniors on their roster in Lauren Blanco, Dana Borsz, Sam Brown, Paige Saunders and Heather Splinter.
  • Blanco and Borsz have both started at libero in their careers, which gives the Penguins to be quite solid with ball control and defense.
  • Sam Brown enters her senior year with 826 career kills and 708 career digs. A three-year six-rotation player, she could become the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 kills and digs.
  • Brown and Sarah Varcolla will serve as team captains in 2017. Varcolla, a junior, posted career highs of 2.25 kills and 1.06 blocks per set last year in her first campaign in the middle.
  • YSU will have a new setter for the first time in three years with Val Jeffery's career finishing. Splinter and freshman Libbie Darling will battle for the starting spot.
  • In addition to Darling, YSU has three more newcomers that will be counted on to play or push returners. They are outside hitters Marketa Plesingrova and Margaux Thompson and middle Jalen King.
