The Youngstown State volleyball team got 15 kills from Sarah Varcolla and 13 from Sam Brown in a five-set loss to UTEP on Saturday at the Glory Road Invitational. The set scores were 22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13.
Brown was named to the all-tournament team as she averaged 2.36 kills per set on a .246 attack percentage in YSU's three matches in El Paso, Texas. She had her best match of the tournament against the Miners, finishing with 13 kills on a .310 hitting percentage while adding an ace and two blocks.
Varcolla had 13 kills and five blocks, and Morgan Tippie posted nine kills and three blocks.
Macey Austin paced UTEP with 25 kills on 59 attempts.
After Youngstown State was in control for a good portion of the first set, UTEP rallied to take the next two to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Penguins held off UTEP in the fourth to force a winner-take-all fifth.
The teams battled through 10 ties and five lead changes in the fifth, and Youngstown State held a 13-11 lead after back-to-back aces by Libbie Darling. UTEP called timeout and proceeded to score the final four points of the match.
Youngstown State will return home to host La Salle on Monday at 2 p.m.
